Yikes! Your old mattress might not just be killing your back.
Few people think about the materials that go into making our mattresses. After all, we trust the manufacturers not to harm us and usually buy on good faith. But mattresses are not all the same. Many contain harmful chemicals, toxins, allergic dyes, colourants and other substances that can seriously damage you and your family’s health.
As you’re going to spend around a third of your life in bed, your mattress should not only provide a great night’s sleep but be 100% safe, clean and healthy. Understanding mattress safety and certification is important to help you choose a mattress made without any harmful chemicals.
In fact, if you remember only one thing from this article it’s this: Only buy a mattress that meets CertiPUR-US and OEKO-TEX® STANDARD100 global certification.
Every Winkl mattress meets this stringent mattress safety and health requirements: all have full CertiPUR-US and OEKO-TEX® STANDARD100 certification, which means they meet all international standards for a healthy mattress.
Winkl mattresses are also hypoallergenic, dust mite resistant and are held together with water-based, non-toxic glues. Buying a mattress that is 100% compliant and certified means that your family can sleep easy knowing everyone is safe from mattress chemicals and other nasties. Being extra comfortable is an added bonus.
Mattress certifications and safety standards
If you’re looking to buy a non-toxic mattress it can be confusing and frustrating. Plenty of brands make bold safety claims and their mattresses have all sorts of confusing labels attached.
But all you have to look for are mattresses that have been CertiPUR-US and OEKO-TEX® STANDARD100 certified. That’s it. As long as your mattress has these two certificates, you’re good to go. However, if you want to know the technical reasons why they are so important, read on.
CertiPUR-US Mattress Certification
A simple way to understand CertiPUR-US certification is that it’s a fully independent and laboratory-accredited health check for foam mattresses.
A CertiPUR-US-certified mattress keeps the air inside your room fresh and free from dangerous chemical elements like VOCs, formaldehyde, and PBDE retardants.
CertiPUR-US mattresses are good for both adults and children too. This is not the case for non-certified mattresses that can release dangerous chemicals like polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs), volatile organic compounds (VOCs), radon, allergens and other substances in the bedroom. These elements deteriorate your room’s air quality and can harm everyone’s health. A CertiPUR-US certified foam mattress does not contain any of the following banned materials:
Phthalates (pronounced “thal’-ātes”) are mainly used as a softening agent in the manufacture of some products. The US Consumer Product Safety Improvement Act (2009) eliminated the use of eight specific phthalates for use in children’s toy and child care items. CertiPUR-US goes a step further by requiring detailed laboratory analysis of foam extractions and prohibiting the use of phthalates regulated by the Consumer Product Safety Commission in all CertiPUR-US certified foams.
No ozone-depleting materials
The CertiPUR-US label prohibits the use of any CFCs or other ozone depleters in the mattress manufacturing process. The Montreal Protocol, adopted in 1987, mandated that industries eliminate ozone-depleting chlorofluorocarbons (CFCs) by the year 2000. Unfortunately, in some parts of the world, CFCs are still used to manufacture foam.
No mercury, lead or other heavy metals
Though not common components of foam chemistry, heavy metals in food (mercury in fish) and in the home (lead paint in children’s toys) have made the entire heavy metal family an area of concern. CertiPUR-US laboratory testing subjects material extracted to molecular analysis capable of detecting even trace amounts of heavy metal content. CertiPUR-US verifies that registered foams are made without mercury, lead and other heavy metals.
Like heavy metals, formaldehyde can cause of poor indoor air quality. The absence of formaldehyde in foam mattresses is verified by a small chamber emission test in CertiPUR-US-certified foam.
No PBDEs, TDCPP or TCEPs
Flame retardant TDCPP, TCEP and PBDEs chemicals that may cause cancer, genetic defects or damage fertility may not be used in certified foam.
Low VOC emissions
Volatile Organic Compounds (VOCs) are a major component of air pollution. VOC emissions from household products are also a concern for indoor air quality. CertiPUR-US certified foams are tested using a small chamber test standardised by the International Organization for Standardisation (ISO)*. In the test, foam samples are conditioned for 72 hours after which emissions of total organic compounds are measured. This test verifies that CertiPUR-US compliant foams have low emissions for indoor air quality (less than 0.5 parts per million).
*ISO is one of the largest voluntary standards development organizations in the world and is a trusted source for technical standards for materials, products, systems, and services. Known for their high technical quality and market relevancy, ISO standards have an important role in the technical infrastructure that guides design, manufacturing and trade in the global economy.
OEKO-TEX® STANDARD100 Mattress Certification
OEKO-TEX® STANDARD100 is world-renowned for fabric testing.
However, OEKO-TEX® also tests every single component before a finished mattress is allowed to carry the STANDARD 100 label.
This includes threads, buttons, zippers and linings. Any prints and coatings applied to the outer material are also tested for harmful substances according to the criteria applicable to them.
If your mattress carries a STANDARD 100 label, every single item has been tested for harmful substances: your mattress is completely harmless to adults and children. In many cases, the STANDARD 100 goes far beyond national and international mattress standards.
An OEKO-TEX® STANDARD100 and CertiPUR-US certified mattress is the best you can buy
