We’re catching zzz’s for kiwis

There are only 68,000 kiwis left in the wild and we’re losing 2% every year to predation. Experts estimate brown kiwi will be extinct within two generations. We’ve partnered with The National Kiwi Hatchery Aotearoa to give our feathery friends a fighting chance.

Out of every 100 eggs laid in the forest, only 5% will make it to adulthood.

The Winkl Kiwi Project uses leading husbandry, incubation systems, hatching techniques and rearing methods to give kiwis a 65% survival rate.

Each egg is incubated in a safe environment. When the eggs hatch, we give the chicks a full checkup and place them into brooder boxes to keep them cozy. The chicks are fed, and when 3 weeks old, released into outdoor enclosures that imitate natural forests.

They stay in their outdoor enclosure until they grow to 1kg in weight, then are returned to the wild.

"At Winkl, we believe no company should operate without making the communities and environment they operate in better. The Winkl Kiwi Project is our way of improving the natural environment for future generations to enjoy"

"They say it takes a village to raise a child - well it's the same for kiwi. With the support of Winkl we are able to accelerate the recovery of Kiwi and ensure the long-term survival of our national bird."
