How to Clean a Mattress

How to Clean a Mattress

Mattresses are technically meant for sleeping — but they’re often used as so much more than a place to lay our heads. We’re a practical mattress company that realises your mattress may occasionally substitute the dinner table, or become your child’s jungle gym. So if something spills on your mattress, there’s no need to worry - take a look at our top tips for how to clean mattress stains.

Tip One: Use Baking Soda

You don’t necessarily need to use a fancy mattress stain remover to get rid of stains. Our first tip is to try sprinkling a coat of baking soda on the mattress over the stain. Cleaning a mattress with baking soda will do a reasonably good job at absorbing excess liquid and odour. Let the baking soda sit for a few hours, then grab your vacuum and work over the area to make sure the stain has disappeared. We know many of you live busy lives, so if you need to clean it up in a rush, an hour should be long enough for the baking soda to have worked its magic.

Tip Two: Create Your Own Mattress Stain Remover

If tip one has still left your stain in tact, your mattress may need a little more deep cleaning than baking soda can provide. While food and liquid spillage are pretty easy to get out with something as simple as baking soda, you’ll may need to use something a little stronger to properly clean other stains.

We recommend mixing a mild dish soap, baking soda, salt and lemon juice together to create an effective mattress stain remover. After you’ve made the mixture with these everyday household items, you’ll need to add it to a spray bottle. Spray the stain(s) and let the mixture sit on the mattress for ten minutes before blotting your mattress with a towel or rag. Leave it to dry, and you should find yourself with a clean mattress by the end of the day!

Tip Three: Air Out Your Mattress

After you’ve finished your mattress cleaning and gotten rid of any stains, we recommend airing your mattress out for a little while. Open nearby windows and let the fresh air flow inside of the room — this will eliminate any signs of bacteria or mould that are present on your mattress. The fresh air will also make your mattress smell a lot fresher!

Tip Four: Wash The Outer Cover

As a last resort, consider washing the outer cover of your mattress in cold water and hanging it out to dry. Winkl mattresses are equipped with a removable, machine washable outer cover that enables you to get on top of life’s little hiccups with ease.

Tip Five: Look Into The Future

We recommend investing in a mattress protector because it will protect your mattress from spillages. The cleaning process is a bit easier if you accidentally spill something on your mattress, and there’s a mattress protector on top - you can simply just pop the mattress protector in the washer! We recommend this for those who find themselves constantly cleaning their mattress and for those who just prefer to keep their mattress clean with a regular wash. Mattress protectors are like insurance — but for mattress!
